Make Sure to Have Some Fun

Caregiving tasks may occupy so much of your time that you forget to enjoy life. Yet, you have to make sure to have some fun! You’ve heard the adage that laughter is the best medicine. Making time in your week for a little fun and a few laughs is an important part of caring for yourself.

Think about the things you used to enjoy. Try to reconnect with the person you were before you began caring for your loved one.

Here are some activity ideas to consider:

  • Make your favorite brain-healthy snack and watch an old movie
  • Think of a friend you enjoy and give him or her a call
  • Listen to the music you most enjoyed in your teenage years
  • Walk in the park or public garden with your pet
  • Go for ice cream with friends
  • Create a great meal and invite family over
  • Take a scenic drive
  • Find a sporting event to watch on television
  • Plant something new in your garden

Caregivers can also get in the habit of saying “no,” automatically turning down invitations without thinking. The next time someone asks you to join them, stop and consider the invitation. Ask yourself what’s stopping you from participating. Perhaps a friend or family member can handle your caregiving duties while you take a break. You may be the main caregiver for your loved one but you do not need to do it alone!

Looking for ways to have fun and saying “yes” whenever possible will reduce stress and make you a better caregiver.

The Alzheimer’s Project is here to help!

The mission of the Alzheimer’s Project is to provide comfort and support to people living with memory disorders and their caregivers. If you are a caregiver, we encourage you to reach out and let us know how we can help. If you know a caregiver who needs help, please tell them about our supportive services.  Providing care is heart-wrenching, demanding, and difficult. No one should have to, and you do not need to do it alone!
