5 Holiday Tips to Help Families Facing Alzheimer's

Do you know a family who has been affected by Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia? You may be wondering how you can help during this busy holiday season. We have a handful of holiday tips that you can use to help families facing Alzheimer’s disease in your community.

Here are five holiday tips to help families facing Alzheimer’s:
  1. Simplify Traditions – You don’t have to let go of your favorite family traditions! Just make them a bit more simple. Consider scheduling activities earlier in the day. Keep the invites to a minimum. Designate a quiet area in case the main area gets too chaotic. Involve the person with Alzheimer’s in easy tasks like setting the table.
  2. Offer to Host – If the main caregiver usually hosts, offer to help with tasks or take on hosting completely. It’s important to stay close to the daily routine of the person with Alzheimer’s. Ask how you can incorporate the holiday celebration without interrupting their habits.
  3. Give a Practical Gift – Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease is a 24/7 job! Gifting a house cleaning or grocery delivery could be very helpful. If it feels appropriate, you can even offer to stay with their loved one to give them a break.
  4. Send a Note – Sometimes, we just want to know someone is thinking about us. Sending a positive note through text, email or in the mail is an easy way to brighten their day.
  5. Ask How You Can Help – It’s hard for anyone to ask for help. Think about a few things you could do and make the offer. Even if they don’t accept your assistance now, they may later.

Holidays can be very difficult for everyone when a memory disorder is involved. Try to savor the moment and enjoy your time together. Also, don’t forget to let them know about the Alzheimer’s Project! Our services are available to families throughout the Florida Big Bend.
