Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the Alzheimer’s Project, Inc. Our organization exists to provide comfort, support, and assistance to persons with memory disorders and their caregivers in the Big Bend area. Alzheimer's Project, Inc. is a non-profit organization funded by grants and private donations. Alzheimer's Project, Inc. is dedicated to providing relief to the caregivers of persons suffering from Alzheimer's disease or other memory impairments. The goal of Alzheimer's Project, Inc. is to keep caregivers healthier, both physically and emotionally and to prolong the abilities of caregivers to care for their loved ones. Volunteers are an integral part of all of our programs. We look forward to working with You!
We have several current volunteer opportunities. All volunteers, except event volunteers, are asked to make a 6 month commitment.
Day Respite Volunteers: We need volunteers to assist guests with mild to moderate dementia in a group day care setting one day a week between 9:00 – 3:00 for a minimum of 2 hours a week. Volunteers are supervised by the Day Respite Coordinator. Activities include: singing, arts and crafts, puzzles, scrapbooking, seated exercises, bingo, and much more. We have limited openings for this position.
Day Respite Meals on Wheels Delivery Volunteers: Volunteers pick-up Meals-on-Wheels from Alzheimer’s Project at 11:00 AM and deliver meals to one of the Day Respite Sites then return the empty boxes to Alzheimer’s Project. Time commitment is 1 hour a week.
Project Life Saver Volunteers (PLS): Project Life Saver is a GPS tracking device that individuals with dementia wear on their wrist or ankle so that they may be found if they wander from home. Clients need their PLS batteries changed once every other month. We need volunteers to go to client’s homes to change their batteries. The hours are flexible may be done in the evenings and on weekends. Each battery change, including drive time, takes approximately one hour. Volunteers are encouraged to serve more than one client. This is our greatest need for volunteers.
Office Volunteers: We need office volunteers to greet caregivers of individuals with dementia on the telephone and in person. Office volunteers are trained to provide information and referral to families. They also assist with writing thank you notes, answering phones, and maintaining email lists. The time commitment is 2 hours minimum one day a week. This is our greatest need for volunteers.
Event Volunteers: We need volunteers to organize beforehand and assist on the day of fundraising and educational events. (Events are November, January & February.)
The Volunteer Training is held monthly. Please contact me to find out the day and time of the next volunteer training.
We will discuss volunteer opportunities, Alzheimer’s disease, and participate in hands on activities to learn how to interact with adults with dementia.
